September Sun In My Garden

I love to be in the garden any time of the day.
Early mornings are especially precious - quiet, serene and a bit mysterious.
Everything looks good enough.
But then it comes. The sun. Sun makes all the difference.
Not the middle-day hot and powerful sun, but the morning shy and gentle sun.
Everything starts to change, and the contrast between the dark and light parts of the garden brings excitement.

Grape gazebo and ilex hedge

Phlox and roses are framed by clematis arch

Tall fir trees serve as a wonderful background for the garden

Agapanthus is finishing blooming for good, while campanula is in its third blooming shift

Stone path between salal on the left and hydrangeas on the right leads to the blueberry bushes

Fuchsias are in full bloom in the mixed front bed. Acer 'Autumn Moon' adds some pink too.

First sun lights up stonecrop between the boxwood and lamb's ears

Blue hebe 'Quicksilver' is an eye catcher here

Green and white are the only colors in this relatively new plant bed

Geraniums in the container are waiting for their portion of the morning sun

Clematis montana is admiring itself in the mirror

Red Abyssinian Banana shows its colors

I hope this September weekend is sunny and warm for you.

  2. What lovely, serene gardens you have. The morning sunlight makes it so special too. That is a lot of work to keep it so orderly. I love the colors and the different foliage.

Have a very nice weekend ~ FlowerLady

    1. Lorraine, thank you! It looks like our Indian summer is coming to the end, but the grass and trees will stay green year around.

  7. I think your garden is beautiful any time of the year.I really like all the green and the textures of the foliage. But the photo of the banana plant with the sun and shadows is my favorite!

    1. Dorothy, thanks! I'll try to overwinter this banana. The second one grows in the container and doesn't look as good as this one.

  10. Also my favorite time of the day, especially when there's sun. Thanks for this stroll through your garden. You have a fabulous garden! The space and the surroundings, both wonderful and something unthinkable over here. Probably why I always have to show detail pictures of the garden, impossible to get these great views as you show us. It must be heaven to walk through your garden. Such a variety of plants as well. Wow!

    1. Thank you Marian! I appreciate what you say about surroundings. I try to keep a green barrier between our garden and two neighboring gardens to have privacy. Tall evergreens and thick native shrubs help a lot, but I need to add more bushes.

  11. Some very lovely photos today. I want to mention how the "negative" space of the lawn areas does so much in your yard and that or others who use it. It is such an important design principle and you show it well without even mentioned it. Great to see how in some of your photos it makes the rest of the gardens look so good. Like that a lot. I will return. Jack

    1. Thank you, Jack! I'm very pleased to hear about my lawn. I think it helps an eye to rest and not get overwhelmed with all the plants.

  12. Your garden is gorgeous any time of the day, but morning sun really is magical. I don't like to get up very early, so I look forward to late afternoon, when the sun does its magic tricks all over again.

  13. Stunning. My favorites from this post are your hebe and that gorgeous banana. I might have to try that banana in a container next year. Is yours in the ground, or in a container?

    1. Thank you, Sarah! I have one banana in a pot and one - in the ground. The one in the ground is looking great, the one in the pot started to get yellow leaves in August.

  14. Your garden is just looking gorgeous in the morning light and.........that is not the only thing, the design is beautiful and it all looks so nice and tidy! I also see rather a lot of tender plants in your garden, don't you have heavy frost in winter?
